2x(x)+(-12)= 3x+(-12)= x=-12/3 x=-4

You need to use the FOIL method... first, outside, inside, last. Multiply in that order then simplify. (2x+3)(x-4) = 2x^2 - 8x + 3x -12 = 2x^2 - 5x -12
