what role did the united states play in the cold war

The Soviet Union was a Communist country whilst the USA was a Capitalist country. Because both countries had the atomic bomb it was impossible for them to go  against each other. Instead, they engaged in a Cold War between 1945 and 1989 – a war without actual fighting between American and Russian soldiers.
