Why is freedom of expression an important right in American society? People must be able to share ideas without fear of punishment to participate in civic life. Defendants on trial have a right to representation from an attorney to help defend them. Early leaders of the nation supported it, but the freedom no longer requires protection. Without freedom of expression, people would not be able to vote in elections.
